4 Tequila Cocktails to Make at Home that are Sophisticated AF

Is your knowledge of tequila limited to just several phrases? Things like…

Spring break.
Mexico.
Margaritas.

If so, I feel you. It’s sad, but understandable. Tequila has been woefully underappreciated for far too long, unceremoniously thrust aside in favor of endless vodka flavors and the cool guy staple, whiskey. Fortunately for us, tequila is currently experiencing a long overdue renaissance, and it’s worth a second look.

But if your only exposure to tequila is as a shooter or basic, boring margarita–and you know yourself to be too cool for that kind of shit now–how can you give this booze a try?

Here are four tequila cocktails you can make at home that are sophisticated AF.

Paloma
If you haven’t been enjoying Paloma’s all summer long, you’ve been missing out. They are as basic as they come—just silver tequila, grapefruit juice and a splash of soda water. You can get fancy and add some lime juice or lemon-lime soda, but at its core the Paloma is a humble two-ingredient cocktail. Its simplicity lends itself perfectly to parties or all-day summer boozing. Just mix up a giant pitcher and spend the afternoon drinking it by the pool—or in the park, or on the balcony, or in your living room. Who cares!

Ingredients:
1 ½ oz Ghost Tequila
3 oz Fresh squeezed pink
grapefruit juice with pulp
2 squeezed limes

Method:
Shaken and served on the rocks.
Garnish with lime wheel and
grapefruit wedge.

Pineapple Lime Smack
Pineapple and tequila go together like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Add in a very hearty squeeze of fresh lime (and a few leaves of cilantro, if you’re not one of those mutants who thinks cilantro tastes like soap) and now you have a party! Depending on how adventurous you’re feeling you could reach for a spicy tequila or stick to a standard silver. Either way, the tropical notes are sure to transport you to an island paradise far, far from home…unless you already live in such a place, in which case you can bugger right off.

Ingredients:
2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice
2 ounces freshly squeezed lemon juice
6 ounces pineapple juice
2-4 ounces tequila (to desired level)
4 sprigs cilantro

Method:
In cocktail shaker add all ingredients with 4-5 Ice cubes. Shake. Serve on the rocks with garnishes. Bonus points for edible flowers

Bloody Maria
Bloody Marias aren’t anything new (it’s literally a Bloody Mary with tequila instead of vodka) but when made with a properly fiery tequila like Ghost, they are the PERFECT hangover cure. Skip the coffee that’ll only make you feel like a warmed-over zombie. A little hair of the dog combined with a bite that’s just enough to wake you the fuck up is precisely what the doctor ordered. Make mine a double, doc.

Ingredients:
2 oz Ghost Tequila
4 oz Bloody Mary mix

Method:
Add ice, garnish with celery,
olives, lemon wedge, and salt &
pepper rim. Brunch is served.

Spicy Strawberry Margarita
So you’re not ready to venture away from margs? It’s cool we got you. These are not your middle-aged mother’s sickly sweet 2-for-1 happy hour margaritas, though those do have their place I suppose.

(I have a very fond memory of once spending hours trying to convince my mother’s drunk friends not to steal the signature margarita glasses from a certain chain restaurant. You know the ones–made of glass so thick you could probably bludgeon someone to death with them.)

Anyway, this Spicy Strawberry Margarita is less like a typical margarita and more like the sexier, sophisticated version of a strawberry daiquiri. I’m not a “sweet drinks” kind of girl, so to temper the sweetness of the strawberry you’ll want to use an unapologetically spicy tequila like Ghost. The fire will be just enough to knock you back on your heels and keep things interesting.

All you need is the tequila, strawberry mix, and a strong squeeze of fresh lime. I recommend this one on the rocks because it’s way easier than dragging out a gigantic blender, if you even have one anymore. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Ingredients:
2 cups crushed ice
1/2 cup strawberry puree
1 cup Ghost Tequila
2 limes, juiced
Splash Triple Sec
Splash simple syrup

Method:
Blend together all ingredients or shake and strain over ice. Either way, get ready for your taste buds to be entertained.

Here’s to your next blurry late night, ladies and gents. Happy mixing!
